University of Maryland Summer Research Program
For High School, College, and Predoctoral Dental and Medical Students
This program provides students with the opportunity to gain direct, hands-on
biomedical research experience under the mentorship of faculty actively engaged
in research. Training includes up to threer-months of intensive research
training. The students immerse themselves into the laboratory culture, receiving
formal training in statistical analysis, scientific writing and ethics in
science – an exciting seminar series, and mentoring for developing a career in
the biomedical sciences. High school and college programs recruit heavily from
the minority sector.
University of Maryland
Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
The graduate component of this fellowship provides training for students with
or without prior clinical experience to conduct research in areas related to
oral and craniofacial biology. Graduate students prepare themselves for a PhD
and an academic career in the biomedical sciences. The postdoctoral fellowship
experience develops oral health research investigators who are qualified to
conduct clinical and basic research. This program encourages integration between
basic and clinical sciences by requiring all of our trainees to gain experience
in both areas of research. Opportunities are also available for junior and
mid-career faculty, seeking new research initiatives or to retool their current
research skills.
DDS/PhD Program
The combined DDS/PhD program graduates outstanding individuals who
demonstrate excellence in clinical skills and research expertise, preparing them
for an academic career in dentistry. This is a seven-year program of study,
which consists of traditional dental training with three years dedicated to
research. Other students interested in oral and craniofacial health may pursue
an MD/PhD through a combined dental and medical school program.
